Friday Film Vault- Just Kids

Patti Smith and Robert Mapplethorpe

Patti Smith by Robert Mapplethorpe

I recently read Just Kids by Patti Smith. What a truly captivating book that opened me up to  the world of two great artists; Patti Smith and Robert Mapplethorpe. An aspiring tale of two souls who found each other on the streets of NYC and together discovered their voices in the world of art. Being a photographer I know of Robert Mapplethorpe but never knew the connection between him and Patti Smith. It was quite impressing to read how they evolved from two street kids into the artists we know today. My life story is by no means as exciting as theirs, but it inspired me to find some photoraphs of musicians I have taken in the past at one of my first jobs working for FlagLive, in Flagstaff Arizona.

Stunning

Christian Dior Spring 2011 Couture

Dior's Spring 2011 Couture

There's something about this dress and the others in Dior's collection! They evoke the glamourous era in Vogue when Irving Penn and Richard Avedon took the covers. Simply stunning! I'm truly inspired. How awesome would it be to photograph a shoot with these dresses.

Friday Film Vault

I'm usually traveling somewhere warm in the winter months but unfortunately not this year. So for some travel nostalgia,  I found some old negatives from a trip to Thailand in 2003. These images reminded of me of Chansonetta Emmon's photos that  captured a fading era. The woman in this picture belongs to the sub-group of the Karen know as the Padaung. Their  tradition of beautifying women by adding brass rings to their necks has been preserved largely for generating tourism. I felt a little weird wandering their village taking pictures but the  mystic presence they eluded was hard to not capture.

Maine Inspiration - Chansonetta Emmons

Portrait of Herself, By Herself (self-portrait with camera), 1904, gelatin silver print)

Apple Blossoms, 1904, gelatin silver print,

Shelling Corn from the album Glimpses of the Summer for Christmas 1900, gelatin silver print

Old Table Chair No. 2, 1901

I recently came across Chansonetta Emmons in the book, Against All Odds:Women Pioneers in the First Hundred Years of Photography. Her photo "Old Table Chair No. 2" jumped out at me. I then realized that she was in fact from Maine. Kingfield, Maine to be exact. She captured daily life in rural Maine which was fading with the times. The old man in the picture is more than just posting for a portrait but a symbolic passing of an era. She truly inspires me to do some portraits of the the locals around town. We are in rapidly changing times. I can't even begin to imagine what it will be like 100 years from now.

Weekend Shoot

heidihaseltinephotography

This past weekend my husband and I went in search of ice shacks to photograph. During the winter when the lakes are frozen, you'll  find many shacks set up for ice fishing. These particular shacks were found on Lake Winninpesaukee in New Hampshire. I don't think ice fishing is for me but there sure is a lot of character out there on the ice. I would love to get some good portraits of the people who own these shacks.

Happy Sunday

Vive La France!

Spring 2011 - Lookbook

Take a look a Wildfox Couture's Spring 2011 Collection. They seem to be channeling the Marie Antoinette
spirit as well. What a fun shoot.

Friday Film Vault

Shot with Fujicrome

Funny how things circle back around.
I found this image from my film vault circa 1998 when I was attending school in Northern Arizona. It was my beloved sister, Marte, and my attempt at our first concept shoot in the desert flats outside of Flagstaff. The concept being; Marie Antoinette - queen of the desert. We even had cake. Unfortunately being a novice photographer and stylist, the cake shots didn't quite make the cut.  Needless to say, I still had the idea of eating cake in the desert!

Website in progress

I'm currently getting myself back into to the world of photography. After a couple years of laying low, I'm re-inventing myself and getting back on path. First step is redoing my website. Which I'm in the process of doing and this a little sneak peak. One step at a time.

Let them eat Cake... in the desert

What dessert would I eat in the desert.....

I'm traveling in a caravan across the Sahara desert. We come upon a white tent. In this tent is the most elaborate spread of buttercream frosting cakes and cupcakes. Mouth watering  decadent cakes of all different flavors. With of course the best buttercream frosting in the world.  Let me eat cake in the desert.
